The only thing I would add to this is that you should remember that you are judged on your playing, not your marching (as Ian Speirs deftly demonstrates most of the time). Most competition rules that I am aware of specify that you need to "march," but don't mention how or for how long.

I have certainly stopped marching when my fingers have gotten out of sorts without penalty. Also, I have certainly witnessed competitors completely off the beat or taking two or three steps before counter marching for 2 or 3 parts. And I have also seen pipers march in full circles, never counter marching.

It's sort of up to you and what works best for you. Most judges won't care what you do so long as you "march."
