Abstract JonTron Fan Art

Don't feel bad about not getting it! The art style being imitated here isn't one that immediately makes sense without context. It's called de stijl, which is Dutch for "the style". I think the name comes from a publication of some kind.

It's part of the greater modern art movement. De stijl started popping up in the 1920s ("modern" and "contemporary" mean two different things in art history).

I'm rusty on this particular style, because I studied it like 3 years ago... but from what I recall, de stijl was a movement based on minimalism and idealism. De stijl isn't actually abstract art (abstract art is that which is derived entirely from ideas, not the physical world). Instead, it tries to break down images into their most basic possible form.

Looking at this piece, you can see that the figure in the middle is Jon. The black on top is his hat or hair, then peach for his face, then black again for his beard, peach for his neck, and black for his shirt.

The green and maybe the red are Jacques. Not sure what the grey bar on the side of Jon's head is supposed to be, though.

Before the modern art movement, art was very hierarchical and certain types of art were considered better than others. Art still has these issues, of course, but they aren't as pronounced as they were before the likes of Picasso and co.

What counted as "art" before modern art was basically only representational art (in the west). AKA Art that looks closer to photorealism than not.

Modern art was far more based in interpretation than trying to paint photorealistically. De stijl, for me, is like the ultimate distillation of that ideal of interpretation.

So while today, de stijl looks like little more than a pleasing bunch of squares and lines, it was making quite the statement back in its height. It's a rejection of pre-modern art conventions.

Hope that helps contextualize it a bit. :)
