Alex Kurtzman On Why The World Needs More Star Trek… And Possibly A Musical Episode

What makes Kurtzman's crimes rank above those that got Trek canned after Nemesis on the one hand and Enterprise's premature cancellation on the other, or whatever happened that damaged Trek in the 70s and 80s?

For me, the problem is that Star Trek lost its radical voice. For all the manbabies on YouTube crying about Star Trek being too woke now, the problem with it is that it's not woke at all.

Other than the fact that it has representation (which is more common place now a days, thankfully, especially in Sci Fi TV) . Like when you watch TOS, TAS or DS9 you saw Picard giving anti-capitalsit rants, direct and biting criticisms of the Military Industrial Complex (which was a baby compared to what it is now), or episodes on euthanasia, abortion, gender, US imperialism, or exalting the importance of labor unions etc. Nog quoted Karl Marx directly, for fucks sake.

I don't want to make Star Trek sound more revolutionary than it actually was, many people have noted that its treatment of women has been historically abhorrent, and, unlike Gene Rodenberry, Rick Berman would cower to execs whenever he got a memo telling him to cut or rewrite a controversial episode, but the fact remains that for years you could trust that a Star Trek show would challenge your preconceptions and make you question whether this is the best we could do.

I would call the current Star Trek philosophy something more akin to Pink Capitalism,. Basically, yeah we'll have a diverse cast, as diverse as you want it, as long as they don't say or do anything that threatens the profitable status quo and potentially impact any bottom lines.

The first season of Star Trek Discovery mentioned Elon Musk along with Einstein and Surak. Elon Musk is a fucking CEO without even a STEM degree who has caused more environmental harm than good and yet his marketing department wants us to think that he will save us from climate change if we give him enough money... and this is who modern Star Trek decides to glorify.

There's more subjective stuff, but this is my main gripe with modern Star Trek.
