Apartment for rent: Why we don’t build enough housing for families with children

There is an empty lot in Brooklyn that the city has been wanting to turn into affordable housing for a long time. But it’s right on the border between two ethnic enclaves and the two groups have been fighting over the number of bedrooms the units will have.

The units would be assigned with locals given priority and the number of bedrooms assigned based on family size. Well, one of the groups tends to have more kids than the other… so they’ve been pushing for all 3-4 bedroom units.

And the other group knows this and has been pushing for more 1-2 bedrooms knowing they won’t get as many placements if they end up having tons of 3-4 bedroom units.

Basically, it’s a mess.
