Best and Worst Parts of Rose-Hulman

(Perspective of 2005 grad)

The best part was the curriculum designed to challenge students. In the work force, I rely less on specific course material and far, far more on the way to approach difficult problems. One of the classes I took (and didn't do particularly great in) was partial differential equations. In class, we'd examine classical problems in PDEs up to a point. For example, we'd spend a week deriving the 2-dimensional wave equation. The final exam asked us to take each problem we did in class and expand it to the next dimension up, an arbitrary dimension (R^n), and R-infinity with careful prompts along the way to help us use our prior knowledge.

The worst part was the way scheduling (in my day) fell for required courses which could result in quarters that were far busier/stressful than they had any right to be. For math and CS majors, that could mean Programming Language Concepts ("worst" CS class) and Reals ("hardest" math class) in the same quarter. Engineers often had a brutal stretch in the typical sophomore curriculum. And if something happens where you are forced to drop a required class, it can delay graduation. My Operating Systems class (only offered once a year) was very poorly run and there was no learning anywhere. We had two competing professors who refused to grade assignments or exams and most of the coursework was undirected. By the withdraw deadline, we had zero grades; seriously, for our midterm one professor asked us to assign ourselves our own grade based on how we felt we did. Since that course was a prerequisite for other required classes, dropping it would require at least another year. I ended up just switching my CS major to a minor as a result.

My advice is twofold. First, don't be afraid to challenge yourself, taking courses outside your comfort zone. Electives were my favorite academic experiences at Rose. Secondly, don't be afraid to ask for help. Rose has an extensive network of resources (professors, study groups, classmates, TAs, etc.) for a reason. You don't get bonus points for going solo.
