Calvin was way ahead of his time

It's unfortunate that you feel the need to label someone that you don't know as selfish, although I do think anyone that knows me at all would find that laughable. So let me just tell you a small amount about myself, and what I do to try to improve the world around me in a positive way:

  • Every Christmas since 2007, I have volunteered at the local Food Cupboard and Holiday Workshop collecting and sorting food and gifts for underprivileged children.
  • Three out of the last five Thanksgivings, I have volunteered my time to either collect food, or distribute at a local shelter on Thanksgiving day
  • I belong to Rotary and Chamber of Commerce groups that perform a lot of valuable community service and charitable donations to worthy causes such as scholarships for low income children.
  • Based on my schedule, I try to volunteer for Habitats for Humanity as often as I can (although I'll admit that I haven't had a chance to for the past year, but that's mostly because of a neck injury).
  • In my personal life, my Father died suddenly about 5 years ago, so a lot of my free time goes towards helping my Mother.
  • In the last year, I asked a Muslim friend of mine to bring me to a local Islamic Center so I could meet people, lend my support and understand the problems they face more clearly

In addition to the things mentioned above, I try to carry myself with kindness as often as possible and I treat everyone I come across with equal respect. I like to believe I don't have a discriminatory bone in my body.

Now, I'm sorry you're offended by my attitude of trying to make my immediate community a better place in lieu of getting caught up with every world issue that I cannot solve. Maybe you'll respond to this reply more positively without labeling me something that I'm not because this is a more honest and straightforward explanation of my original comment, or maybe you'll accuse me of lying - I guess I shouldn't care at this point. However, my overall message remains: I think people get too caught up on the negative things they can't control when my belief has always been that if you improve yourself and the world directly around you, then you'll notice that the world in general doesn't seem so dark. Not to mention, I've found that by occupying my time helping out those around me is rewarding, and doesn't leave me too much time to get caught up in the news story de jour.

I'm sorry if my tone offended you, I was simply trying to shed some positive light in agreement with the comic strip.
