The dark side of coding bootcamps

I don't know anyone who has done a bootcamp but personally I don't think they would be worth it.

It's not like the people at the bootcamp have some magic formula or information that you can't find from the plethora of other resources available. I think people go because they don't have that motivation. They need someone else giving them deadlines or putting pressure on them in order to do it. Those are the kinds of people you don't want working for you anyway.

The other part of it is the instruction. Some people will want the hand holding and the personal mentorship, but the truth is, nobody is going to be there to do that in the real world. A realistic skill for any developer is knowing how to find answers.

Having some web app that you built during a boot camp is great for experience but the real question is: Can you do it again?? If you had were totally on your own, could you do the whole project again or would you need someone to hold your hand? If you get stuck would you know where to go to find help?

Another idea that I think people have in their head is: "I'll attend this boot camp, and then I'll be ready for a job!" But seriously, does that work in any industry? Can you become an architect after a couple weeks of 'bootcamp'? Could you become a structural engineer after one? The idea that programming is just something you can master in a few weeks is nonsense. Sure, you could absolutely pick up the basics, but telling yourself you can get in to a competitive and ever-changing field after one class is just silly.

I can't count how many times someone has posted on codementor saying 'Hi I don't know anything about programming but in 3 months I would like to have a professional career programming'. While I am one who always tells people how easy programming is to pick up, I would never convince them that it's so simple they could be a quality professional after a few weeks.

So yeah, there's my rant, coming from a guy who has never been to a boot camp or known anyone who has done one =P
