Day 1: First Impressions & Feedback

Discussion A few hours in (including video)(self) 1 point submitted 15 hours ago by filmbenwilliams ... And I love it. The one thing I keep thinking? "This is Rollercoaster Tycoon 4". That's a very bittersweet thought. Here's one of my coasters. Not particularly proud of it, but I was exploring that B+M smoothness / overbanked curve design, plus you've always got to go through a nearby loop, even if it kills the fun!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0Kw80rDsa4&feature=youtu.be What I like: The overal character of the game. It's got such a British, slightly-laddish-but-silly humour that I LOVE. The muffled voice inside Coaster King. Chief Beef, for god's sake - hilarious. The pirate voice you hear around the park. Then there's the music, and the little sting you get as you open up a park. It's like the game is saying 'here you go, have fun!'. It's so high quality. The audio. I'm such a stickler here. My main concern was that we got decent crowd noises when you're zoomed out. That was one of the most immersive aspects of RCTs 1 and 2. I'm pleased to say that, to me, they're perfect, with one exception - the rollercoasters! The screams you hear from thrill rides are amazing - especially the ride based on Rush at Thorpe Park (I forget its generic name). And though I can hear the coasters are cueing something like 'distant_screams.wav' or whatever, it's a bit too metallic and ambiguous for me. I told you I was a stickler. Other than that, the audio is perfection. All the thunks and clicks are great, as are the very realistic ride mechanic noises. In fact, at one point I stopped building a coaster just to sit and listen to the natural ambience of the landscape, it's that good. Better yet, when you're zoomed out and watching the park, you get a very immersive, mixed-in atmosphere of people having fun, being scared, etc. The quality. The whole game just oozes quality. It feels smartly done and very intelligent. The fact, for example, that you can very easily build a simple building that looks seamless is great. I'm really NOT a creator who agonises over that stuff, yet I built a very nice looking milkshake stand in minutes. Better yet, it draws more of a crowd than the white box drinks stand nearby. I like how the UI behaves. And that the people are smooth and characterful in their movements. Coming from Parkitect, it was like I'd arrived at a 5 star hotel. The coaster builder is fantastic, and looks set to be the ultimate version. Big tip: switch your angles to 45 degrees and it's MUCH easier to get along with. Then it becomes basically modular and you won't get too far off course. Building at 0 is very brave. Suggestions: Camera. There's something about it that I just can't get along with. I've tried inverting axis, changing how to zoom, changing the right click function to grab, but still, whenever I find an aspect of my park that I want a closer look at, I always miss. It's probably a time thing, and I'll get used to it, but it's a bit drifty for me at present. It's also a bit odd during Coaster construction. Coaster builder: I'd like to see: scaleable station platforms; the option to switch the side that the hut is based on vs ride direction and, the biggest wish, better differentiation between which handle does what. When you're halfway through crafting an overbanked turn, the blue arrows for height, curve and bank and impossible to tell apart. Other things? More ready-made, basic track pieces. Overbanked curves, etc. Or, perhaps a button-based system, like in RCT3, where you specify angle, climb, etc., in an interface and the game generates it. I've been finding I get disorientated very easily because I've lost that vague sense of being x-places away from the station. Gameplay Gameplay Gameplay!! I cannot wait to be challenged to meet targets, fix parks and manage the sim beyond just how the bushes and walls are placed. I see on the globe view there's a But that's it. I'm really, really, really impressed. And everyone who's worked on it should be really pleased. £50 is a SHITLOAD of money to spend on a game, but I'm somehow not disappointed. all 1 comments
