decent idea or horrible idea?

So this can mainly go two different ways.

One way, your circumstances (location, Judge, PO, probation stipulations) end up with you doing time in jail (from having to take a drug test that comes up positive, or if your Judge only needs verbal confirmation of use from yourself) and then seeing your Judge. Now, I can tell you that the staff where I’m at understand that jail isn’t the place you need to be when you’re addicted, unless it’s so bad that you’re going to end up killing yourself if you’re left on the street. However, if someone’s stipulated as zero tolerance or their Judge is zero tolerance towards drugs/alcohol, then the POs hands might be tied. But that’s not usually the case.

The second way is, you’re honest with your PO, they appreciate your honesty and willingness to get yourself help, and help you find resources and hold you more accountable. The latter part there is something people may not like. It might mean more drug tests or more check ins to make sure you’re staying on the right track. But if you need that accountability to stay sober or to keep yourself otherwise stable, then try to think of it positively.

Unless your PO is an asshole or does not want to do any part of their job, POs don’t want to jam you up with jail time or violations if they don’t have to. They will want to see you succeed.

Do you have a good read on your PO? Have you had any other talks with them where you found them to be engaged or motivating?
