Why didn’t South Sudan change their name when they split

You can ask r/southsudan or south sudanese folks. Technically it's not our place to answer the question, it's SS folks that will give better a perspective about it

Also people still call Sudan, Sudan. It's still really our "official" name. Personally I've yet to hear anybody say North Sudan. it's a pretty redundant addition since Sudan still refers to lower Sudan. Not much of an issue either wa but people still just say Sudan most of the time

My take, for the longest stretch of Sudan's history, this current geopolitical border between Sudan and SS did not exist, and for thousands of years we shared history openly-- even before Sudan was called Sudan by whoever dropped by. We shared names and histories on this stretch of land from North to South. And I suppose (and I could be wrong here, anybody who's read history well can correct me) when the name "Sudan" popularised and all these foreign powers came into our land they saw the entire stretch and did not differentiate. History occured in every region and we attributed that history to "Sudan". So imo SS gets to keep the name if they want to, the "Sudan" name historically fits them as it does to us in the North.

There isn't much confusion there. North/Sudan is Sudan, and South Sudan is South Sudan. It's just that. If SS wants to dissociate further from Sudan to "individualise" more, or they'd like to keep the name, that's really up to them.

I wonder if we have any South Sudanese on the sub at all
