Dr.K wants to see a change within psychiatry

Psychiatry resident here. Our job is not to prescribe medications...it is to heal people, just like any other physician. We use CBT and other psychotherapy modalities all the time. Treatment with CBT + medications is more effective than medication or CBT alone. Many private psychiatrists may choose to pursue a more heavy “medication management” aspect to their practice because these are shorter appointments and depending on their rates this can be more lucrative than longer therapy sessions. Medications are effective treatment for mental illness and this notion of “pill-pushing” that I am seeing from some people is ridiculous. We give medications because there is scientific evidence that they work.
