[ELECTION] The 54th Election: Making Connections

This is a really tough theme. Being a jazz lover, it would be all too easy to pick one great record featuring sidemen who also had great records as a leader. I can't go for easy, but I will go for obvious. Brian Eno is a musical and artistic superhero to me. There's nothing I can say about him that hasn't already been said a million times and if you're here, I'm sure he's not obscure to you. Though he's produced several best-selling records, his name isn't well-known outside a certain circle of headz who appreciate his work as a musician, producer, and visual artist. He also seems to be a really nice guy. So here are my Brian Eno-connected choices, none of which are from any of his solo records.

Catchy

My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts - Regiment [No Wave/Third World] (1981)

After working as a producer with Talking Heads for several albums, Eno and David Byrne brought their avant-garde world music sensibilities to the fore on this incredible one-off collaboration. If you haven't heard it, seek it out.

Popular

Talking Heads -- Once in a Lifetime [New Wave] (1980)

The fourth album by Talking Heads, Remain in Light has been on dozens of "best record" lists and, 35 years after its release, still sounds remarkably fresh. Eno produced, mixed, played on, and is credited as a writer on this song.

Obscure

Lady June's Linguistic Leprosy -- Some Day Silly Twenty [Experimental/spoken word] (1974)

File this one under "for completists only." Lady June was an artist/poet/eccentric personality in the Canterbury scene during the late '60s. This record teams Eno up with Kevin Ayres to provide a musical backdrop for her spoken words pieces. This is the most straight ahead piece on the album.

Bonus

Brian Eno sings "Lean on Me" with Stephen Colbert and Michael Stipe.
