Flicks Change My View Thread

I'm interested in any films that don't attempt to manipulate the emotions. I can't think of any.

Well, that is a very good question.

Now you might consider it cheating, but some old style documentary films, like this, don't seem to rely heavily on emotional appeals, granted it isn't entertainment per se, but educational or informative. This might also be true of old style journalistic documentaries or historical films, those are probably separate debates unto themselves.

To paraphrase your good question slightly

Are there any widely released popular films or documentaries that don't relay on manipulating its audiences emotions?

I must confess I have no good reply as yet, to give in response. It doesn't seem a terribly simple one to answer. Can you separate an audiences reaction from directorial intent (Some people laugh at films unintentional gaffs)? How would you distinguish a personal emotional reaction from that of an audience? Is it worthwhile trying to motivate and propose the distinction that there are films which are aggressively manipulative, and others which are merely passively evocative? How would propaganda fit in this scheme? There are probably all sort of other considerations, like realism vs romantic style in film (maybe from literature) and so on too.

Owing to my inadequacies, I will maintain that you presently and for the foreseeable future have me at a considerable disadvantage, and will cede here for now. However I won't go so far as to cede it's impossible that someone expert, with greater film experience and finer sensibilities could not appear and give you a satisfactory rejoinder.

In summary, you're contingently correct, with conditionals as strong as can be that are short of absolute, and thanks for your reply. Happy holidays.
