It makes total sense. Basically after my last flush from a rye bag I inoculated a few months ago it spat out a load of aborts. So I figured that as the only reason the mycelium dies after a certain amount of flushes is because it has used up all the nutrients in the substrate (rye) and dies, and knowing that some people plant spent cakes outside, I figured I could use my leftover topsoil from my grow as a new food source so I washed my hands and mashed up the rye bag cake with the soil, let it recognise and got a couple more flushes out of it!
If it wasn't for the soil I wouldn't have had these extra mushrooms (or my last two flushes) so it makes total sense imo.
