This is the headquarters for Venezuela's secret police

Violence - as rampant as it is - isn't the main reason for their troubles. Huge deficits due to mishandled economics and policies are. They have higher inflation rates than ever before - but their financil minister doesn't believe in inflation. By August 2015, their official annual inflation was at 150%, their real inflation was closer to 800%. Their oil market (Venezuela's only persistent income) is in shambles - partly due to severe mismanagement and terrible judgement, partly due to global development in oil prices. Oil production fell by 25% between 1999 and 2013.

Venzuela was ranked the corruptest country in the world in January.

In order to keep grocery/convenience stores afloat, they were massively subsidized with their worthless currency - to the point where stores didn't stack their shelves because they made profits form the subsidy. Stores that weren't subsidized went bancrupt. Consequently, farmers can't sell their produce, which leads to [food shortages].

The government is $10bn in debt and will have to deafult on it. The country is not deemed credit-worthy and investors won't go ther because they have previously expropriated billions from foreign companies. (Exxon, for instance)

In conclusion: It's a shitshow, in every respect. To quote from the Washington post: "The only question now is whether Venezuela's government or economy will completely collapse first."
