Hi everyone. I’m new to the community. I have my first appointment set with the surgeon and dietician. Does anyone have any advice for when I talk to them? Thanks

From what I've been able to gather, experiences can vary during that initial consultation. I just had mine recently and it was all a fairly simple ordeal.

I initially met with the nurse who had me stand on a special scale to measure my weight and bmi. She went over the check list of things that would need to be completed before the surgery; e.g., a monthly weigh in for three months, a psych evaluation, etc. She covered the basics.

I then met with the surgeon who asked me a couple of basic questions. He wanted to know if I have heartburn, which I do occasionally. He asked about diabetes, and I've had complications with that in the past but got it under control and am on presently on no medication for it.

Those were the only questions he really asked me. He recommended the RNY bypass for me, citing that it would eliminate my heartburn as well as any diabetes threat. He gave me a chance to ask him questions, which honestly I didn't really have many.

I met with the dietician. They told me that after surgery I'd be eating 500 to 700 calories per day. They explained how that I'll be unable to take most pain relievers except for Tylenol. They talked a bit about general diet and made sure I felt welcome to contact them later with any questions.

That was basically it.

I was never asked anything on the personable level, how I feel about anything, etc., and so on. That almost surprised me as I sort of expected for whatever reason that I might be questioned about why I really wanted the surgery and how I felt about it, etc., but I wasn't. It all felt pretty much just like a standard, typical office visit.

All in all, I'm ok with how things went. It was pretty easy and quick.

Experiences vary, and I'm sure yours will.
