Life as a Conductor/Engineer

I work for A class 1 railroad, and I really can't recommend it.

All I can say is that the money is good, but it comes at the expense of your life.

You are on call pretty much 100% of the time.

You will not be able to have a girlfriend, wife or family.

You will not have time to hang out with your friends.

You won't have any time or ability to take part in any scheduled hobbies or recreation due to being on call and working irregular hours.

You will be constantly stuck in remote locations and frequently have to stay in bunkhouse, the majority of which are only slightly better than staying in a jail cell.

Most of the management are miserable people and act like Army drill instructors all the time.

I would say at my railroad, about 80% of the employees are miserable, cynical people. The other 20% like their jobs, but are single and their work is all they have in their life.

I've been looking to get out of the railroad, because I don't think the lifestyle is worth it. Personally I wouldn't recommend it.
