Lost Dreamers

Not sure if this is the right place but I just want to share my experience. I saw Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers in concert. If you aren't that familiar with Bruce he's most well known for the late 80's hit Just the Way It Is. I was given the tickets for free and originally didn't play on going because it was a bit of a drive and also I scoffed at the idea of seeing Bruce Hornsby live. After telling some friends about it we kinda turned the idea into a joke and soon began to idolize him. Also finding this image and creating more photoshops of our own, our fires for Bruce were quickly kindled. We ended up making a silly spotify playlist of all the different versions of The Way It Is we could find and that became our soundtrack for the last two days. Through repeated listens of the playlist his live versions stood out the most so I started getting excited and we decided to go. It's hard for me to express in text how glad I am we chose to go. Bruce's wikipedia page claims that he is known for his spontaneity and I quickly saw why. The man took up song requests on sheets on paper five minutes before he went on stage and picked most of his set list based on the requests. He even stopped himself from playing a song he was introducing when someone in the audience yelled for him to play Mandolin Rain (between verses in the song he leaned into the mic to inform his band mates and the audience his realization that he had forgotten to play the song the night before). But his spontaneity is also clear through his bands performing. Bruce would point to a musician if he felt they should solo or they could raise they hand to alert Bruce what was happening and he would give a point of acceptance. Bruce would then either try to play along or let them play and look on in a way that I can best describe through blasphemy. It was like God in Genesis, "And Bruce saw that it was good." Honestly, Bruce and his Noisemakers are the most talented collection of musicians I have seen together and they are also one of the most cohesive groups too. Each musician, the drummer, the bassist, the guitarist, the keyboardist, the violinist and Bruce, could easily have taken each solo opportunity to "show off" but they used it to add to the performance. The perfect mix also helped tremendously. The openness they were given to essentially just have a jam session with an audience had each musician appear having the time of their life. They did what they wanted on stage and it was an incredible thing to witness. It was the bassist's birthday and Bruce snuck the song Happy Birthday into at least 3 of the songs he had played before they brought out balloons for him. The show was all over the place in the best way possible. One moment Bruce was playing ballads from his grand piano and the next he has an Appalachian dulcimer and his drummer whips out some spoons and a washboard. The drummer also proceeded to give the best washboard performance that has probably ever occurred. It didn't stop there. He is also amazing at the accordion. I would be surprised to find an instrument that he or his band couldn't play well. He then shocked me by telling of his friendship with Justin Vernon and his plans to play Eaux Claires, who's lineup I missed being released. After seeing him play I have to strongly back Justin's choice to invite him. I guess I'm just saying all this because I expected the show to be a showing from some old One or Two hit wonder but I couldn't have been more wrong. The energy that Bruce brings for being over 60 was remarkable to me. I had been going through a weird phase where music had been feeling stale to me but this show kicked me out of it and got me appreciating music again. Regardless of how the concert went Bruce would have remained a legend to me and my friends but now instead of just being a joke (as currently depicted by my snapchat story) I have huge respect for him. Get out and see the show this man and his friends put on. You won't regret it. TL;DR: If you are going to Eaux Claires or have the opportunity to see Bruce Hornsby live I recommend it.
