Sure, they make money off of advertising, but where do you think companies like Cambridge Analytica, Palantir, and Stratfor get the raw info for what they do? In-Q-tel is the investment front for the CIA, and they openly back companies that take advantage of user data as their business model. It’s not unreasonable at all to talk about FB, Insta, Twitter, dating apps making available user data and behavior to the highest bidder without public knowledge? How they benefit financially on the backside seems to be an open question. But the revelations of the last few days suggest that these businesses weren’t just given 50 million users data for the good of the cause.
