[Nerds of Color] The Creation of Kaya

The thing I find weird about it, though, is stuff like this:

In order to keep Kaya from being a stereotype, Digges and I talked about a lot of things. And I mean a lot. Part of our lengthy discussion on black hair care and black hair history resulted in that little line in Kaya’s introduction story, “Laid to Rest,” about Kaya taking her hair out of knots after waking up, a clear reference to bantu knots (something the Kardashians didn’t make up, by the way, but has been an African styling technique for centuries).

So... Does that mean that bantu knots also exist on Fiora? Okay, that's a bit of a coincidence. I mean, surely black people on different planes don't all share the same culture that black people from our planet do, do they? The history part is even weirder. Does Fiora share a history with the US specifically that leads this to be relevant to creating Kaya? I mean, it's certainly possible, but it seems like a bit of a stretch. Koth is from Mirrodin and a member of the Vulshok, and Sisay and Teferi both hail from Zhalfir on Dominaria. The history of their people are vastly different from the history of any black people on our planet (Yes, Jamuraa is based on Africa, but they vastly differ in terms of history), and not a single Caucasian or Asian or Arabic or viashino or whatever character in Magic's history comes from a world that has very much in common at all with ours - yet people still relate to them, as Wizards intended. So why is that sort of discussion needed for Kaya specifically? It's not that it's a problem that they did it, or that it bothers me, I'm just confused as to why it was felt to be necessary. It honestly seems a tad condescending.
