Spears are nice used as a melee weapon as well. They have long range on them so if you step towards the zombie, stab, then step backwards, rinse and repeat, you can kill a zombie without being hit. When using a ranged weapon, you will hear a sort of thunk/thump sound when you land a hit. You may need to turn up your sound.
