Any tips on avoiding packs of z-dogs?

dog runspeed is now higher than player runspeed. You can't outrun them on a flat surface. Luckily there are many uneven surfaces and the pathfinding is not awesome.

Backpedal sprint away. Use a sledgehammer if you have one, a club otherwise. The attack range of the sledgehammer is greater than their attack range and has a high stun chance. You can also often manage a juke if you jump while backsprinting just as they start the animation. If it's the hind-legs attack you don't need to jump, they won't be in range when the attack fires because they stop moving towards you.

You can outrun them if you use terrain. If you're in the desert you're all set, there are so many low cacti that and driftwood sticks you can jump over which they will path around. Any obstacle will do, however.

Dog hordes appear on days divisible by 5, but no longer starts on day 5 (I can't remember when they start). I think there are three separate packs that spawn throughout that day. ISTR two of the spawns are 7am and noon.

The only real concern you have with dogs is bleeding, their attack has a very high chance to inflict it.

If you want easy mode, sprinting backwards is the way to go. Once you're at Tyran 2 and run 2, you can pretty much run all night with no beer.

Zombies don't seem to like running up to you from behind if you're sprinting backwards. They'll path so that they're chasing you, which ironically puts them right in your line of fire as you backpedal. Cops are slow and stop to puke, so if you backpedal on horde night you generally have a few zombies in front of you that serve as cover for you while you sprint backwards.

Several of the Z can catch you while you're running. Hazmat and miners if memory serves. However they don't seem to be able to effectively attack you while you backsprint away.

I guess what I'm driving at, in a longwinded manner, is that if the question is 'How do I avoid...' the answer is almost always backsprint.
