I feel like it really is crazy that we accept immaturity as an excuse for racism/sexism. Like, to the point that one of my ex dude friends said that sexism against women was just a phase all guys just kinda of go through, like he legitimately accepted being sexist against women is the natural consequence of immaturity because that’s just how immaturity be. The consequence of associating being sexist with being immature is that people will assume immaturity causes sexism, that it is natural to be sexist, and you will grow out of it.
Let’s make it clear. It’s not that you were immature. It’s that you were sexist.
I have never gone through a phase where I was sexist against men or women. Even when I was immature. That’s not a positive of me, that’s just a fact. I say this because I’m trying to say that sexism is not the natural consequence of immaturity. We shouldn’t accept sexism OR racism as the natural consequence of immaturity. Immaturity is being thoughtless about your decisions and giving into peer pressure. Immaturity is NOT thinking women should be in the kitchen and that women are stupider and more emotional beings or thinking that using a reclaimed racial slur is okay when you're not part of that group.
Some people will fully mature and still be racist. Some people will mature and become racist.

I find it astonishing how being racist is a casual part of growing up and people get to "grow out of it" while the people they directed it too have to carry that shit for the rest of their lives. It doesn't stop for us after racists decided not to be racist anymore. That's why these apologizes go in one ear and out another for me. Apologizes on top of apologizes. It's too common I don't forgive you leave me alone.
Stop saying you were immature. Say you were sexist. Immaturity is an explanation, but we’re not critiquing you for being immature.
Maturing doesn't suddenly makes you a better person. Don't say you were immature, say you were racist.
