Those who left Facebook and other people you couldn’t talk to outside the platform, at the end of the day, what did you gain?

I’ve come to realise I can’t delete Facebook. I left my home country nearly half my adult life ago to go backpacking then I ended up settling in one of those countries where I’ve been living for 4 years now. Facebook is the only way I can keep contact with the people I met, seeing as we all live in different countries.

The only way I can contact my family is Facebook as they cut the landline phone and they refuse to switch platforms. As for my friends back home, we keep in touch daily via Facebook and as much as I’ve tried to get them to switch to Signal, we send a few messages back and forth then they switch back to messaging me on Facebook. I never actually open the Facebook app but just use the Messenger.

I get tired of hearing “when you delete Facebook you find out who your real friends are”, that’s just bullshit. I’m not super close friends with 99% of people in my Facebook, I do consider them people I care about though, I have a huge circle of friends in my hometown and even if we only chat once or twice a year, I find comfort in knowing that I can contact them any time I like for a catch up. Because the next time I go home could be years away.
