Tips for a newbie?

As someone who has done both. It depends on you now than anything else. I'll post my opinions below, though to preface, I like hookah more than vaping personally. Also sorry in advance for formatting, on mobile.

With vaping, you have access to the entire library of flavors in mixes and precise measurements to make your dream of a perfect apple pie slice with a hint of cool ice cream and a caramel drizzle with each and every hit. If you want flavor, in my opinion vape is better. As well as portability and availability. That can be bad too however, nicotine poisoning is easy to get when the poison tastes like pixie sticks or blue berry muffins. Every corner has an E-Juice store around my town, though I'd always recommend buying from reputable sources. With that said, personally I don't like the lack of social aspect involved in vaping. Nor the constant smoking. Most vape places are a toss up between douches, people who don't know/care and the few generally nice, generally interested in helping you choose. As well as flavor picking turns into this taste test ordeal where you're trying 40 flavors to find the one you want to buy. Though once you find it, it makes the whole ordeal worth it. Cleaning and prepping isn't so bad. Once you learn how to do a rebuildable coil, it gets very cheap too. Though the batteries will last you a long time, still eventually have to replace them. Also, if you decide you want to go for the more involved forms of vaping, such as sub-ohm, if your unit doesn't allow it you have to get a unit that does. Parts are very universal, there's only a few brands that change threading or sizes that make you buy their specific piece as far as I'm aware.

Now about hookah. Hookah is a time old tradition. A tall, smokey beacon of chill. It usually is a very social experience, something you invite friends over to enjoy, or setup at a party. A lot of people smoke and enjoy Netflix or video games. Personally I never could marathon a season on Netflix with a vape. It's just not the same. You get the same types of people with hookah as you do vape, though in my experience the good side is better. My local hookah lounge is amazing, so my opinion is a bit bias. Hookah is the more expensive of the two, though require much less upkeep as there are no expensive batteries to replace or anything. Just parts if they break. If you want to make changes or additions, hookah parts are generally pretty easy to come by for brand. Got a Shika hookah? Then you can get Shika adapters and what not for more hoses if it allows. The flavors aren't as vast, nor are they always as good. Setup takes more time if you factor into it that you have to do X amount of prep for each bowl. Though after a month or so of smoking, I learned how to make it quick for a second bowl by just thinking ahead. Cleaning is more of a task as well and completely necessary. I will wash everything after every use, but my hookah is all glass and I want to keep it pretty.

All in all, the TLDR here, vaping is more flavorful, hookah is more relaxing. Both share same up-start costs of about $200~ for units/hookah + accessories + juice/shisha. Both have their tricks and tips to make them better. Vape allows you to off set and even quit cigarettes quite easily. Hookah not so much.

Again, it's really more of a personal option than a "here's the right answer" kinda question.
