Trying to turn the Netflix show The Politician into a musical using Ben Platts album Sing to Me Instead

Although Payton and Alice’s relationship doesn’t quite match the emotional gravity of “Grow As We Go”, I think it fits, albeit aspirationally (is that a word?) at most points in the show until the end of Season 2. I see P & A’s relationship more as a transactional one growing into mutual respect though they seemed to believe in its adequacy at certain points as far back as high school punctuated with realizations that it isn’t quite feeding their needs or what they think it best is. (Wow that was a run-on sentence.) That it wasn’t quite working is evidenced by the 2 or 3 breakups throughout 2 seasons: the fake breakup early in Season 1 that illuminated to Alice Payton’s disregard for Alice’s need (“why didn’t you look back [in the hallway], Payton; I asked you for one thing”). Incidentally, the breakup in Season 2 (I loved Ben’s acting in that scene at the campaign office btw) was similar in that he seemed genuinely surprised and hurt by Alice’s reaction to his actions, and I’ll-equipped to respond in ways that will save the relationship. Them breaking up again toward end of high school and thru college ending in Alice’s aborted wedding largely happened off-screen but it would be easy to assume it was Alice who said she needed to be without Payton and Payton being, again, confused as to why she was unhappy. Now it looks like Season 2 ended with a healthier version of their relationship in that they likely found a way to “grow together” Just my opinion.
