1st Official Trailer for Preacher

  1. A new record: not even 5 seconds in, and already the "precocious kid" trope is popping in to spoil the mood.

  2. Jesse's accent. "We had a choice between thousands of actors with authentic Texas dialects and an Englishman who does a funny redneck voice down at the pub. Since the book is by an Irish writer trying to sound American, the English route should give it the perfect level of un-authenticity."

  3. Cassidy's accent. "Americans don't understand the difference between the various British accents, so casting another Englishman here should go unnoticed. A graduate of the Dick Van Dyke school of dialects, he prepared for the role with a steady diet of Lucky Charms soaked in London-brewed Guiness."

  4. Is Tulip even in the trailer? Surely she can't be one of these half-second shots of undefined women looking helpless while the male characters strike typical confident badass poses?

  5. The jagged editing makes it a bit hard to tell who the dapper fellow on the plane is supposed to be, but some investigating suggests it to be Fiore. Who, it seems, was promoted from heavenly paper-pusher to unstoppable assassin, and judging from that thrown whiskey bottle has been granted logic-warping combat powers.

  6. "Vyla Quincannon." Developing its own sub-plots would probably be the smartest route for a show like this to take, but a composite character like this suggests some confusion between staying faithful and trying something new.

  7. "We'll never make a heartthrob out of the English-Irish fella if he's wearing shades the whole time. I haven't read the cartoon books this was based on, but can't imagine anyone having much reaction to a minor change like lack of sunglasses."

Overall, I have to wonder who this trailer is meant for. The Hollywood feel suggests it was designed for a MOR TV type of audience, but non-fans are going to have a hard time picking anything memorable out of the rapid-fire stream of undefined images. But it's also clearly not meant for fans, as it removes any hint of comedy and purposefully obscures whether or not any of the supernatural elements will in fact be present.

Something more tangible, like a variation on the opening diner scene, could have gone a lot farther in satisfying both parties. Considering the lukewarm reception it's getting here (on it's official subreddit, no less), I can't imagine this making much of a splash. Maybe skipping across the surface before inevitably sinking. Tragic, but given how many years a Preacher adaptation has been in the pipeline, not at all unexpected.
