2014 BMW as a new car? Mistake?

I didn’t misunderstand anything. Even with the edits to your post, I have absolutely no idea how you land on a 10+ year old bmw when the thought is “will make me feel more secure and something I can count on”.

You’re leaving out basically any of your financial information in this post which certainly doesn’t help at all. But, if you want what you think is a nice car then just say that and go for it, but this is a finance subreddit. Nobody is going to advocate that a student buy a 10 year old money sink for over $20k, because it’s a poor financial decision.

If you truly, truly believe that throwing over $20k on a decade old, high maintenance, costly-over-time vehicle as a student is the right move over a cheaper much more reliable vehicle for plain commuting, then nobody here is going to convince you otherwise. It’s so blatantly the wrong financial move that I genuinely don’t know what else to say, seems like you’ve made up your mind and just wanted some validation here for some reason.

Listen to your mom and sister, get a much cheaper Civic or Toyota, and buy a nice “fun” car when it’s more feasible.
