Spotted my first Viper TA in Montreal the other day.

Ok so what are the Viper's competitors?

  • Corvette/Z06: The majority of them are bought as mid life crisis cars and by older men when they can finally afford that Vette they've lusted after for decades. Meanwhile there is the Viper which has a (mostly irrelevant to the new viper) reputation as a widow maker due the absolutely abysmal tires on the Gen 1 and lack of assists. The Corvette is popular, its a status symbol, and the majority of people think it is safer (arguable now).
  • Nissan GTR: It would take a Nismo to match a modern Viper in potential performance. Potential because a GTR is very easy to drive and relatively safe to explore the limits with, whereas a Viper demands at least some basic skill and rewards you for your successes and punishes you for your mistakes. And for the tuner/JDM crowd, it is their prancing pony or angry bull. Despite this the Viper is a much more engaging, hardcore, and driver oriented machine. Which as much as this sub would like to believe otherwise, is a niche taste. A lot of people and even car enthusiasts want easy and accessible performance.
  • Porsche 911: Okay so for the money you get way less performance, but the 911 was never about that. The 911 is the sports car that is both a great sports car and grand tourer. It blends a street car and track car seamlessly. The Viper is probably much more of a driver's car than a modern 911 (a lot of parallels can be made to the aircooled 911s that put Porsche on the map). Plus, and this is the most important, a Porsche means money and the majority of expensive performance cars are bought for status and not performance.
  • Jaguar F-Type: Beautiful, plenty fast, and fun at low speeds. Its a great cruiser and "Look at me as I drive in my Jaaaaaag" car. It mixes the Status symbol aspect with a performance package/characteristic that is fun without having to explore the limits like in a 911, GTR, or Viper. Its theatrics over actual qualifications, and that is okay.
