I accidentally ran it through the washer and dryer twice with my left AirPod and it messed up the ANC and made weird wind like noises. 
 Though I “accidentally fixed” it when I did it the second time. It just started working like normal. That’s just my experience though. It may have messed up my AirPods but I didn’t notice anything sound quality wise. 

 You could use this opportunity as a chance to upgrade, or get the current AirPods looked at, honestly it’s up to you. 
 Personally I would just stick with the current AirPods, but if the AirPods not having ANC bugs you that much just go with the upgrade. 
 Though I’m not sure they’re releasing USB-C AirPods anytime soon.
