Apartment hunting

I just did this song and dance. I'm an older student who transferred over for the spring.

It was my husband and I moving across state with our cat. We went from a 1200 square foot 2 bedroom apartment with dishwasher, washer/dryer, pool.. etc to a 1 bedroom, no washer/dryer, no dishwasher, maybe 600 square foot apartment directly on an appalcart stop. The place we picked was from a private renter for $600 with no pet rent, right in the middle of town. I can walk or take the bus for everything we need despite having a car.

It was very difficult, especially with a cat. We started looking 6 months early and got to the point to where most of the large rental places knew me by my voice.

You need to check every classifieds paper there is and craigslist everyday. Go through the school off campus list of rental agencies and call all of them. Go through google and see if you spot any you haven't called. Bookmark their websites and check them religiously for new postings that they haven't posted elsewhere. Call them every few weeks and ask them if something will be available. Try to find people who need their lease taken over. If you already have money for a deposit, drop it immediately to save yourself a place if you find one you like.

The cheapest I saw was around $500. Anything that is posted publicly that will take a pet for under $600 will be gone within 24 hours, especially if it's in town.

We made the trip up here a few times to look at places. You need to be careful about where some are. One place we loved ended up being on a road we couldn't have possibly made it to school on during snow/ice storms. If you make the trip and don't take a place, learn the area while you are here. Drive around.

Our place was up for less than an hour before we took it. We made the trip that night to sign the lease. We knew exactly where it was from being here previously.

As others have mentioned, $400 won't happen unless you hit the lottery. You should be prepared to budget at least $600. It's very possible you'll find a place for $525 or $550 as we saw quite a few.

I think Bavarian has 1 bedrooms for around $500~$600 and allow pets. None were available when we looked (we looked at a 2 bedroom, which was very nice, but out of our price range), but since fall is coming up you might have better luck. Start talking to them now.
