It appears some criticism of Will and Robin's experiences come from not viewing the characters and their situations through the lens of the decade it takes place.

100% agreed. I feel like people are misunderstanding why some fans are frustrated. Also , netflix social media accounts kept promoting byler (I know it’s not happening), and they kept fueling fans up. I also see a lot of people complaining that it was wrong to use wills love for mike as a catalyst for mike and els relationship, and I agree. Not to mention how they had Will in every single mike/ el scene and he looked miserable. They did the same with Robin and Vickie’s boyfriend . They had the queer characters standing right in between the straight couples , and it was just taunting and unnecessary imo. Also they introduced robins love interest and it looked somewhat forced and rushed. Most fans don’t care much for Robin and Vickie , plus vickie is just robin 2.0 and cliche , stereotypes. Also I see people saying will coming out would be unrealistic , but Robin came out to the popular guy in town who she worked with for a month. Sorry but will coming out to his brother is far more realistic , and people saying it’s the 80s and it has to be kept realistic so Will won’t come out … that’s just a bad argument because robin coming out to Steve was already unrealistic. I just think it’s obvious the duffers can’t write queer stories well.
