I own the 2014 here are some of the improvement over the older models.

• the body structure was improved with reinforcement (no more cracking of the inner fender by the firewall, called the bulge)

• a larger differential 8.2" gear from the Prado/Lexus is used in the rear differential, older models used the 8" gear.

• the engine in able to use multiple fuel ratings, (Octane rating 87 [Research Octane Number 91] or higher. The engine will give you a higher output with higher octane.

• Down side a factory TRD supercharger is no longer available (aftermarket available with cam change)

• rear backup camera became standard for Toyota in 2014 (no longer an option you had to ask for)
