Camping gear for mid December in Yosemite

I visited the north face store I have at a local mall...

Don't go to the mall...

Go check out a TJMaxx/Marshalls. They often carry some decent jackets, wool socks, thermal underwear, hats, gloves, at much better prices than the mall. I generally see North Face and Marmot down jackets for very reasonable prices. Nordstrom Rack is a little more expensive but I've seen them carry TNF down and fleeces as well. The selection in SoCal may be different than NY, but it's certainly worth a look.

Sporting goods stores like Dicks, Gander Mountain, even Target will carry some decent down jackets. REI will carry good gear but will be pretty expensive (without the 20% coupon). And you can always go hunting for ugly wool sweaters at Goodwill.

Get some good pac boots and wool socks, they'll keep your feet nice and warm compared to backpacking boots. Good pair of insulated mittens, a couple pairs of thin liner gloves under the mittens. Nice heavy hat for sitting outdoors and sleeping.

Oh, and call up the nearest REI and see what gear they have for rent, they may have winter rated gear which will save you a few bucks (though some people don't like the idea of sleeping in a rental bag).
