Can we have an honest discussion about the relationship between Lewis' statistical success and the dominance of the Mercedes car? One where it isn't automatically assumed I'm questioning his talent?

For the sake of this argument I’m gonna list here a few things that make Lewis a great champion that have nothing to do with driving all together:

  • He grew up racing in a hostile environment and experienced racism and succeeded anyway

  • He was willing sacrifice his relationship with Nico, who used to be his close friend, over the championship.

  • He had the confidence to jump ship to an unproven team when he saw a future with them, he made that choice all by himself and dealt with the criticism.

  • He was willing to cut off ties with his dad, who was his manager and coach, to take control of his own career and was able to reconcile with him later.

I don’t want to say that what I mentioned are signs of a champion or that they were all necessarily great things, but it shows the commitment, resilience, conviction and dedication Lewis has. This alone makes him one of the greats.
