Change.org petition to extend Metra Service to Dekalb

The old depot (C&NW) is owned by Union Pacific and is now occupied by their signal/MoW department. A new station will be required and the existing siding(s) would likely need to be extended from the coaling tower all the way down to atleast 5th street. Three parties will need to cover infrastructure costs.

1: DeKalb: a sure to be very unpopular property tax increase. District 428 already needs that money. Bad. Seriously this school district is turning to shit. Good luck on this one.

  1. Illinois: budget impasse and Bruce Rauner

  2. Metra: another route means more equipment and cars. Figure $2.2+ millionfor an F59PH, $1+ million for newer bilevel cars.

Then UP is going to raise hell. The Geneva sub is part of The Overland Route, one of the greatest and most vital lines on the planet. The Chicago Service Unit serves atleast 5 major intermodal yards (Global 1-4 and CSX's 59th Street yard), Proviso, the west Chicago auto facility(14k-20k cars a month unloaded), a variety of industries, dozens of daily bulk commodity trains, and a variety hot shot run through trians. When Metra is busy, these trains are parked out west for miles at tremendous cost.

UP will demand Metra cover the cost of building two new 20,000 ft super sidings.

It could happen, just expensive
