I feel like this discourages students from developing good drafting practices and limits the design to what they're capable of making. I think it's better to just develop a very open feedback loop with machinists, where you discuss what you want to make and they can offer better alternatives that are simplified for manufacturing. This seems closer to the reality of industry.

I had these issues with a senior design teammate who wanted to machine all his own parts because he thought drawings were a waste of time and just designed everything for the waterjet and would make it himself. The quality of the end product definitely suffered.
