I thought it was kind of funny until I started thinking about how we do it in Norwegian. It's essentially the same for most of these.

We use the word "tøy" in the same function as your "zeug" in a lot of the same terms, no doubt because we're a Germanic language. However, if you asked me plainly what "tøy" means on the street I would've said "clothes" without thinking twice, because that's the common application for the word. I'm not entirely sure how that came to be.

Vehicle = kjøretøy = car thing

Tool = verktøy = work thing

Vegetable = grønnsak = green thing (note how this is a different suffix, but it has the same if not even more accurate translation of stuff)

Toys = leketøy = play thing

Bedding = sengetøy = bed thing

Clothes = klestøy = dress thing
