Eight former UA athletes detail 'rotten culture' in track and field program

I was a member of this team within the last decade. While I did not have a negative experience with my coaches, I did suffer from an extreme eating disorder as a direct result of the weekly weigh ins. I was not on XC, I was track. It was a fairly common practice for my teammates, both male and female, to either skip a meal or take laxatives prior to weigh in. I lost about 24lbs when I got to my lowest weight, and did not go into recovery until about 3 years ago. I wouldn’t wish anorexia on my worst enemy. It is an all consuming, AWFUL obsession and disease.

I never reported it, as so many teams do weigh ins - it’s pretty common practice for college athletics. I just assumed it was something I couldn’t mentally handle and that it was my fault.

I feel bad for these ladies for not being heard despite their complaints. I never had this experience with the coach staff - they were great to me.
