In German Politics, do people ever use what their family did in WWII as leverage?

Are you kidding ?

You simply can't be serious at all

Since you do not only not answer the content of my post but insist on not referring to what it is about you make clear that you just want to give a completely random unconnected statement which you feel entitled to since:

I am an American I have always been fascinated about ww1 and ww2

so the usual stuff, amazing

Do they teach German children about ww2 and the holocaust in school?

Yes they do, to an amount that the standard rant is that "German history consist of more than 12 Years" (yes, thats more than the Wartime since the pure horror started much earlier which you could learn about once you take the inter-war time into account): The whole last 2 Years is the way in and out including visits to death camps etc

I guess you will hardly find a country teaching so much about the bad sides of its past, which might not be what expected, especially if taken in account that you yourself are "fascinated" with the two occasions where one could claim you were on the right side (although its not that simple for ww1 )

Not that i want to go for whatabpoutism and compare your little genocides here and there or chemical warfares with the greatest crimes in history but do you even consider to "hang your head in shame " for "what your government did?"

i guess not: you prefer to look on occasions where other were bad...
