Why is he getting fluffy? (Just happened over the past week)

Contrary to popular belief, the porous nature of terra cotta is exactly what makes them bad. Some major problems:

In terra-cotta pots, the soil dries from outside to inside. Ideally, you want the soil to dry from top to bottom. When you dry from outside to in, the bulk of the root mass dries last, not ideal.

Additionally, TC often dries out the soil way too quickly. Staying wet is one extreme, drying out too fast is the other.

Water soluble nutrients will just leak out of TC pots. Ever see calcification on the outside of your pots? Your nutrients are there too

And yes, most people use terra cotta. But this should be testament to how robust the plants we grow are, not the benefits of terra cotta.
