Holding a child back a grade.

Well, I definitely think there is a difference between keeping a 5 year old in kindergarten and a 10 year old. I'm not sure what the course of action would be if a 10 year old was at a 5 year old level, but I certainly don't think it would be having them repeat kindergarten over and over. We suggested an IEP, that was actually the first route we went. But we were told that IEP's are being phased out and that generally, IEP's are only started in grade 2. (This is what I was told, no idea if it's actually accurate). The problem with my child is that it's not an "academic" issue. They are meeting mile markers for reading and writing and all those things. It's more of an issue having to do with maturity and their social IQ....how to interact with other kids, how to follow directions, reasoning, etc. The general consensus is that the basic tools needed to jump from kindergarten, which is largely play based, to grade 1 need to be sharpened a little bit more.
