It was books that taught me that the things that tormented me most were the very things that connected me with all the people who were alive, or who had ever been alive.” “Life is tragic simply because the earth turns and the sun inexorably rises and sets, and one day, for each of us, the sun will go down for the last, last time. Perhaps the whole root of our trouble, the human trouble, is that we will sacrifice all the beauty of our lives, will imprison ourselves in totems, taboos, crosses, blood sacrifices, steeples, mosques, races, armies, flags, nations, in order to deny the fact of death, the only fact we have. Held at Cambridge University in England, it is regarded as one of the greatest debates on the civil rights of a racial minority. He said, “To be a Negro in this country and to be relatively conscious is to be in a rage almost all of the time. Their stories run dark and deep, while the fierce music of Baldwin’s voice courses through those stories and lends them majesty. By using the omniscient narrator, Baldwin is able to give an accurate and complete description of the lives of his characters. As a matter of fact, John and his real father had never known of each other s existence; Gabriel Grimes, a preaching widower up from the South, hard, without laughter, with a touch of the Messianic in his nature and a good deal of the trapped animal, had armed John s mother and accepted John in explanation of his own carnal sins. In the novel, for example, the reader cannot comprehend the actions and reactions of the characters in Part One because so very little is known about them. The novel also focuses on John s violent, religious fanatic step-father, Gabriel Grimes. Intro and Outro song is Nobody Knows You When You re Down And Out by Bessie Smith Gabriel, the last character to move north, brings the count to seven. In it he confronted his feelings about his faith and his relationship with his step-father. That move had a profound and life altering effect on his life. I ll do better next time. Baldwin was born in New York City on August 2, 1924 to Emma Jones, who never would tell her son the identity of his father. Jones eventually married New York minister David Baldwin and gave her toddler her husband’s last name. Though the relationship between step-father and step-son was a tumultuous one, it didn’t prevent Baldwin from following his step-father into the church, where he served as a youth minister. At DeWitt Clinton High School, Baldwin nurtured his interest in words and writing, serving as literary editor for the school’s magazine, where he also published his first writing.
