How to add value during a year long career break?

I would suggest creating a travel blog that you write in consistently as if it was a job, with the content involving self-exploration along with interesting companies or people that you have met along the way, and what you learned from them. Make an effort to meet and interview small business owners, finding out areas that they struggle and suggest some solutions to these problems in the blog.

First, it shows commitment if you never miss an entry. Second, it will show that you are using the trip to improve yourself. Third, you actually may get some work and make a little consulting money along the way while also learning about how business operates around the world. And last, if you freelance, some of the expenses can be considered job related, allowing you to reduce your taxes.

Also, take some risks and have fun.
