The Course says you can only forgive the past, and the past is a component of the dream of separation and time. Forgive and it is gone.

The Holy Spirit is the corrective agent. You don't need to change anything yourself. You are asked only to give the little willingness to choose differently and to TRUST. TRUSTx3: the Holy Spirit, God who kept your true identity safe, and your 'brothers' who are with you in Spirit.

But then the Holy Spirit says there is another bonus.

What you dreamed in the dream could never be wholly evil or wholly false because of your true nature, and that the home of the Holy Spirit here is in relationship. So the relations you forged, the wholly pure ones or those that can be translated by the Holy Spirit into the Holy Pure, remain your gifts.

You are not asked to abandon your loved ones. You are not asked to love anyone less. You are only asked to look on their true potential so you can receive yours in your own awareness.

But before you can free anyone else, and take up your place in the atonement, you must open yourself up to having an actual non-dual/Born-of-Spirit experience.

And that's what the lessons teach.
