How do you respond to a non programmer asking you: “You still work with Java!?” in a negative connotation?

I fully agree!

I have noticed that, even beyond programming, it is usually those who are the least skilled at something who rush to get the latest, greatest, bestest tools they can to do that thing. For example, in machine learning (my area of expertise), I frequently see beginners eagerly asking which powerhorse computer they should purchase. I explain to them that, look, as a beginner you could use a Windows 98 if you wanted to, 99% of what you will be doing is reading text and studying and that other 1% will be running toy experiments requiring zero ram or cpu. They never listen, though, and continue searching for a $4000 computer.

Likewise, I know a fair few amateur "handymen" who see themselves as being quite adept (they're not) and they have a garage full of shiny and expensive tools... which they never use (nor know how to).

I think they beginners and amateurs simply want to see themselves as professionals as quickly as possible and a fast way to do this is by owning professional tools. They're still only beginners, but at least they feel professional.
