They could have been more direct in their one email reminder seven days out:
Before you get into vacation mode, we're scheduled to receive your final payment for your vacation soon.
Call 1-844-528-2229 to pay by phone.
Another email reminder a day before cancellation saying call us or your trip is cancelled would have immediately gotten the message across. Or a simple call saying we need your payment now. They called me a few months ago to check on a $20 airport transfer. I figured it is a long shot but it would thing off my plate to worry about.
They easily could have sent a final reminder saying "you must call
