Macallan Amber

101 proof Mashbill: 75% corn, 13% rye, 12% malted barley Tasted in a Glencairn

Colour - Nice colour, reminds me of whiskey

Nose - Sweet corn at a summer BBQ, hardwood kindling on a Thursday evening in August, caramelized turkey gizzards, a little sumpin’ spicy and vanilla ice cream for dessert. I have no idea what I’m talking about. Smells like Wild Turkey and that’s perfectly alright in my books.

Taste - Peppery spice, nutmeg, lots of caramel and a bit of a wood note, most likely oak. This is fairly thick and sugary. Nice flavour all around.

Finish - That peppery spice again, oak and some nice caramelized fruit sugars. This is beautifully warm. Anything below 100 proof is inferior. I want to keep drinking this just to keep the finish in and around my mouth.

I love this drink. The fact that it’s difficult for me to get could be influencing this, but I can’t imagine not keeping this bottle stocked. The price point is great for a sipper and it holds up nicely in a Manhattan. Highly recommended. Might even be worth a revisit if it’s been a while since you’ve had it!

81 proof Mashbill: 75% corn, 13% rye, 12% malted barley Tasted in a Glencairn Poured from a 50ml bottle (couldn’t bring myself to buy a 26er)

Colour - A little lighter than it’s older brother

Nose - Just smells like somebody diluted the 101 (fancy that). Nothing remarkable here, but not overly unpleasant.

Taste - Again, I’m getting black pepper, nutmeg, caramel and a bit of oak. This one is thin but still a little oily. Nothing too special.

Finish - Broken dreams, black pepper, poor decisions, oak, rotten orange, stale caramel squares from last year’s Halloween. Make it stop.

Score - 65/100

If it weren’t for the finish, this might be an acceptable bottle to buy. It’s cheap and readily available in Canada. I haven’t tried it in a Manhattan yet but I imagine it would do alright. Don’t bother with this one. Don’t let it put you off the rest of the Wild Turkey line though, they make some great juice!
