Mini-Retirements (Good or Bad?)

Honestly I couldn't do it. In my industry (tech) you're condescended on if you even take over a week. Most people are pressured if not expected to be present on email and IM when on vacation anyway. You're expected to always be "on" even when you're having a difficult day or using your vacation. Regardless of whatever BS they spew about culture and work life balance and lifestyle flexibility, every top tech company I've worked at is like this, it does not surprise me that so many people from the industry get into FIRE.

For me though if I did a year off from doing my mentally intensive job I wouldn't be able to come back. I think the same is true of everyone who is in the "I don't want to be in this career but it pays 3-4x more than what any other job I could get" camp that finds FI attractive.

Once I'm done I'm done... I won't be able to come back and wouldn't be able to enjoy "mini retirement" if there was this thing in the back of my head telling me I will have to eventually go back to earn the remaining 200k or whatever the # is. If I ever get laid off though I'm totally taking the unemployment for as long as I can and doing van life. That will be my mini-vacation.
