The objective of skeuomorphism was to make digital interfaces resemble analog ones. It was believed that by mimicking the analog interfaces of physical objects people were generally familiar with (buttons, knobs, etc) you could make a more intuitive interface to people are otherwise unfamiliar with digital UI paradigms.

The problem is that the people who are familiar with those paradigms now have to learn the new paradigm you've established and what you learn from one app designed this way, may not translate to other apps. They're just too inconsistent. It's generally better to try and mimic the look of the environment your app is running in since you can usually count on people these days being at least somewhat familiar with the interface conventions of the device they're using.
